Best Day Trips From Giza: Exploring Beyond the Great Pyramids
Discover the best day trips from Cairo and Giza. From Saqqara to Alexandria, our team at Hostalio Pyramid View helps you plan the perfect Egyptian adventure beyond our doorstep.

Beyond the Sphinx: The Ultimate Guide to Day Trips from Giza
Welcome to your home in Al Haram. While our terrace at Hostalio Pyramid View offers one of the most iconic sights in the world—the Great Pyramids themselves—we know that many of our guests want to peel back the layers of Egypt’s vast history. Being located just 500 metres from the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) makes us a perfect base, but the wonders of Egypt extend far beyond the Giza Plateau.
We have helped hundreds of guests navigate the bustle of Cairo and the serenity of the desert. Here are our favorite, hand-picked day trips that you can easily achieve in 8 to 10 hours, returning just in time for a mint tea on our rooftop.
1. The Step Pyramid of Saqqara and Memphis
If you enjoyed the Great Pyramids, you must visit their ancestor. Saqqara is located about 45 minutes south of our hotel by car. This is the site of the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the world's oldest standing stone structure. Unlike the crowded Giza plateau, Saqqara feels like an active archaeological dig.
Why we love it:
- The Serapeum: An underground gallery of massive granite sarcophagi for the sacred Apis bulls. It is one of the most mysterious sites in Egypt.
- Memphis: The ancient capital of Egypt. It is now an open-air museum housing a colossal fallen statue of Ramses II.
- Price: Expect to pay around $15–$20 USD for entry fees (check current prices at the gate as they fluctuate).
We recommend starting early, around 8:00 AM, to beat the heat. You can book a private car through our /travel-service to ensure you have a comfortable, air-conditioned ride.
2. Alexandria: The Pearl of the Mediterranean
Alexandria is a long day, but incredibly rewarding. Located about 2.5 to 3 hours from Giza via the Desert Road, the atmosphere here is completely different from the desert heat of Cairo. The air is salty, the architecture is Greco-Roman and Mediterranean, and the seafood is unparalleled.
Top Stops in Alexandria:
- The Bibliotheca Alexandrina: A modern architectural marvel built to commemorate the ancient library.
- Citadel of Qaitbay: Built on the exact site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria (Pharos).
- Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa: A hauntingly beautiful fusion of Egyptian and Roman funerary art.
For lunch, we suggest finding a restaurant overlooking the harbor. Fresh grilled sea bass followed by a walk along the Corniche is the perfect way to spend an afternoon before heading back to Giza.
3. Islamic and Coptic Cairo
You don't have to leave the city to feel like you've travelled back in time. Old Cairo is a labyrinth of faith and history.
Start in Coptic Cairo, where you can visit the Hanging Church and the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus, which tradition says sheltered the Holy Family. Afterward, a 15-minute drive takes you to the Citadel of Saladin and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali. The panoramic view of Cairo from the Citadel is breathtaking; on a clear day, you can see our hotel's neighborhood and the Pyramids in the distance.
Finish your day at Khan el-Khalili, the famous 14th-century bazaar. While it is touristy, the side streets hold hidden gems like the El Fishawy cafe, which has been open for over 200 years.
4. Fayoum Oasis and Wadi El Hitan
For those who want to escape the city noise entirely, the Fayoum Oasis is our top recommendation. It is roughly a 2-hour drive from Giza.
- Wadi El Hitan (Whale Valley): A UNESCO World Heritage site where you can see hundreds of fossils of archaeoceti—primitive whales that still had hind limbs. It is an outdoor museum in the middle of the desert.
- Magic Lake: A beautiful lake surrounded by dunes where you can try sandboarding.
- Tunis Village: A charming village famous for its colorful pottery and art galleries.
This trip requires a 4x4 vehicle for the desert portions. If you are interested in this rugged adventure, please contact us in advance so we can arrange a reliable desert guide for you.
Practical Tips for Your Day Trips
To make the most of your excursions, our team suggests the following:
- Transport: Avoid the stress of haggling with street taxis. We can arrange private drivers who know the routes and will wait for you at each site.
- Water & Snacks: While we provide breakfast at Hostalio, always carry a liter of water and some light snacks. The Egyptian sun is deceptively strong.
- Clothing: Wear breathable cotton or linen. For religious sites like the Citadel or Coptic churches, ensure shoulders and knees are covered.
- Timing: Most archaeological sites in Egypt open at 8:00 AM and close by 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM.
