What is the Grand Egyptian Museum?

Opening hours & the ideal time to visit
The GEM is open 09:00 – 19:00 daily with last entry at 18:00. Friday and Sunday evenings typically extend to 21:00 for late viewings. The quietest, coolest time to visit is right at opening (09:00 – 11:00). By early afternoon, tour buses arrive, so plan a lunch break on our rooftop and return in the last two hours before closing if you want to see the Tutankhamun rooms in relative calm.
How to get to the Grand Egyptian Museum
The GEM sits on the Alexandria Desert Road, opposite the Pyramids plateau in Giza. From central Cairo it's about a 45-minute drive; from Cairo International Airport around 55 minutes; from Sphinx International Airport (SPX) about 35 minutes.
From Hostalio Pyramid View, the GEM is just 500 metres away — a 7-minute flat walk down Ibrahim Khattab Street. Guests routinely walk over in the morning, come back for lunch on the rooftop with the Pyramids in view, then head to the Pyramids plateau in the afternoon. Start with the Grand Staircase, then head straight to the Tutankhamun galleries before 11:00 — that's the window before tour groups arrive. Save the children's museum and Ramses II hall for the end when your legs are tired but the walk out is short.

The Pyramids of Giza are only 3.9 km from the museum — around a 10-minute drive. Most guests do GEM first (morning), Pyramids second (afternoon): the museum is coolest early, and the Pyramids photograph beautifully in warm late-afternoon light.
