Beyond Giza: The Ancient Secrets of Saqqara and Dahshur

While we love having the Great Pyramids of Giza practically in our backyard at Hostalio Pyramid View, we often tell our guests that the story of Egypt’s monumental architecture doesn't start or end there. If you want to escape the hustle of the main tourist plateau and see where the pyramid builders actually perfected their craft, you need to head south to Saqqara and Dahshur.

Our team recommends setting aside at least one full day for these sites. They offer a more peaceful, scholarly atmosphere compared to the high-energy streets of Al Haram. Below, we’ve put together our practical guide for visiting these "other" pyramids.

Why Saqqara is the Ultimate Open-Air Museum

Located about a 45-minute drive from our boutique hotel, Saqqara is arguably the most important archaeological site in Egypt. It served as the necropolis for the ancient capital of Memphis for over 3,000 years.

The Step Pyramid of Djoser

This is the star of the show. Built by the genius architect Imhotep in the 27th century BC, it is the world’s oldest major stone structure. Unlike the smooth-sided pyramids at Giza, this one rises in six distinct tiers. Following a massive restoration project completed in recent years, you can now enter the interior of the pyramid to see the labyrinthine tunnels and the green-tiled walls that mimic reed mats.

Incredible Mastabas and Tombs

Don’t just look at the pyramids. Saqqara is home to "mastabas" (flat-roofed tombs) that contain some of the most vibrant wall carvings in the country. We always suggest our guests visit the Tomb of Ti or the Tomb of Kagemni. The level of detail—showing everything from hippo hunts to ancient tax collectors—is staggering and often better preserved than what you find in the Valley of the Kings.

The Serapeum: A subterranean Mystery

If you aren't claustrophobic, the Serapeum is a must. It is an underground gallery of massive granite sarcophagi, each weighing up to 80 tons, once used to bury the sacred Apis bulls. Standing next to these giant stone boxes in the cool, dark tunnels is an experience you won't forget.

The Quiet Majesty of Dahshur

Continue driving another 15 minutes south and you reach Dahshur. This is where most travelers find the "quiet Egypt" they’ve been looking for. There are no souvenir stalls here and very few tour buses. It’s just you, the sand, and two of the most impressive structures ever built.

The Bent Pyramid

Built for Pharaoh Sneferu, this pyramid is unique for its change in angle halfway up. Architects realized the slope was too steep and would collapse, so they adjusted it. It is also the pyramid with the most surviving original limestone casing, giving you a real sense of what these monuments looked like in their prime.

The Red Pyramid

Named for the rust-colored local limestone used in its construction, this was the first successful smooth-sided pyramid ever built. It represents the direct precursor to the Great Pyramid of Giza. One of the best parts about Dahshur? Entry into the Red Pyramid’s chamber is often included in your main ticket price. Be prepared for a long, steep climb down a wooden ramp, but the reward is three incredible corbelled ceilings that are masterpieces of ancient engineering.

Logistics and Planning Your Trip

To make the most of your day, here are our top tips for a seamless experience:

• Timing: Both sites generally open at 8:00 AM and close around 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM (times can shift during Ramadan or summer months, so check current hours upon arrival).
• Transport: While you can try to find an app-based ride, it is difficult to find a return trip from Dahshur. We recommend booking a private car through our travel service to ensure you have a driver waiting for you at each stop.
• Comfort: There is very little shade at these sites. Bring a hat, high-SPF sunscreen, and at least two liters of water per person.
• Tickets: You can now pay by credit card at most major Egyptian sites, though keeping some small change in Egyptian Pounds (EGP) for bathroom attendants is helpful.
