Exploring the Giza Plateau: Your Guide to Life Near the GEM

Welcome to our neighborhood! At Hostalio Pyramid View, we have the unique privilege of watching history unfold every morning. Located just a 500-metre walk from the massive entrance of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), our team spends every day navigating the vibrant streets of Al Haram. Whether you are here for a single night or a week-long exploration, there is a specific rhythm to this part of Cairo that we want to help you master.

While the GEM is undoubtedly the star attraction, the area surrounding it is rich with experiences that many travelers miss. From hidden rooftop views to the best spots for a traditional Egyptian breakfast, here is our curated list of things to do within walking distance or a short drive of our front door.

1. The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) Experience

You cannot stay this close without stepping into what will be the largest archaeological museum in the world. As of early 2024, the museum is in its trial phase. This means while the full galleries (including the Tutankhamun collection) are still being prepared for the grand opening, you can already access the Grand Staircase, the commercial area, and the Hanging Obelisk.

We recommend booking your Grand Egyptian Museum tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. The museum is roughly a 7-minute walk from Hostalio. Walking there allows you to beat the traffic and soak in the scale of the architecture. The interior is climate-controlled and features several high-end cafes and boutiques. Even in the trial phase, seeing the 3,200-year-old statue of Ramses II in the atrium is a life-changing moment.

2. Sunset at the Pyramids of Giza

Though the GEM is the new neighbor, the Giza Plateau remains the eternal king of the district. The main entrance to the Pyramids is about a 5-to-10-minute drive from our hotel. While you can certainly visit in the heat of the morning, we often suggest our guests head over in the late afternoon.

Pro Tip from our team: The site generally closes at 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM depending on the season, but the view stays forever. If you want to avoid the crowds, consider a camel or horse ride through the desert surrounding the plateau. We can help you arrange a reliable guide through our travel service to ensure you pay fair local rates (typically around $15-25 USD per hour, though you should check current prices upon arrival).

3. Dining Like a Local in Al Haram

You don’t need to go into Downtown Cairo to find incredible food. The area around the GEM has seen a recent surge in both modern and traditional dining options.

  • Koshary: You must try Egypt's national dish—a hearty mix of pasta, rice, lentils, and spicy tomato sauce. There are several clean, local shops within a 10-minute walk where a large bowl costs less than $2 USD.
  • Rooftop Tea: Many buildings in our area, including our own terrace, offer views of the Pyramids. There is nothing quite like sipping hibiscus tea (karkadeh) while the sun sets behind the Great Pyramid of Khufu.
  • Fine Dining: For a more upscale evening, the 9 Pyramids Lounge offers a view like no other, located right on the plateau itself. Reservations are essential.

4. The Solar Boat Museum and Beyond

While the original Solar Boat has been moved to the GEM, the area where it was discovered near the base of the Great Pyramid is still a marvel of engineering. Walking around the base of the pyramids allows you to appreciate the sheer scale of the limestone blocks. If you have the stamina, we recommend walking from the Great Pyramid down to the Sphinx. The Sphinx Temple is particularly atmospheric in the golden hour light.

If you find the logistics of navigating the plateau overwhelming, don't hesitate to contact us. We can provide maps or pair you with a licensed Egyptologist who knows how to bypass the most aggressive street hawkers.

5. Evening Leisure and Shopping

After a day of walking through history, you might want a change of pace. The Mall of Egypt and Mall of Arabia are roughly 15-20 minutes away by taxi or Uber (usually costing between $3-6 USD). These malls offer everything from international brands to an indoor ski slope. However, if you prefer something more authentic, the papyrus workshops and perfume palaces along Pyramids Road offer a glimpse into ancient Egyptian crafts, though we always advise our guests to haggle firmly.

Why Stay Near the GEM?

Choosing to stay in Al Haram rather than central Cairo saves you hours of traffic. When you stay in one of our rooms, you wake up to the sight of the pyramids and the sound of the city waking up. You are perfectly positioned to be the first in line at the GEM, ensuring you get those perfect, crowd-free photos.

We take pride in being a family-run establishment. We don't just give you a key; we give you our local knowledge. Whether it's finding the best pharmacy, ordering a late-night shawarma, or figuring out the bus schedule to the Citadel, our team is here to make your Egyptian adventure seamless.

Planning Your Visit: A Quick Checklist

  1. Transport: Download Uber or Careem. It is the most transparent way to get around Giza and Cairo.
  2. Hydration: Always carry bottled water. The Giza sun is unforgiving, even in winter.
  3. Currency: While many places near the GEM accept cards, keep small denominations of Egyptian Pounds (EGP) for tips (baksheesh) and small street purchases.
  4. Timing: Plan for at least 3-4 hours for a thorough GEM trial visit and another 4 hours for the Giza Plateau.

We look forward to welcoming you to Giza and sharing the wonders of our neighborhood with you. Egypt is a place of stories, and we can't wait to be a part of yours.
